Abstract

Background:

Fractalkine (FKN) is a unique,membrane-bound chemokine, which exists intotwo forms; the soluble form is apotent chemotacticagent for T cells and the anchored formfunctions as an adhesion molecule.

Objective: Psoriasis and atopicdermatitis (AD)lesions were examined to gain insight into theexpression of FKN in pathologic lesions characterizedby aprevalent Th1 or Th2 response.

Methods: This study included 20 psoriatic patients(group 1), 20 AD patients (group 2) andten healthy individuals serving as controls(group 3). Skin biopsy was taken from both patientsgroups and volunteers fordetection ofFKN level by ELISA.

Results: Fractalkine was detected in all psoriaticpatients with a mean of 204.385 μg/mgtissue,and in atopic patients with a mean of229.225 μg/mg tissue. Regarding to the healthyindividuals (group 3); FKN wasdetected with amean of 219.150 μg/mg tissue. Statistical analysisrevealed a significant difference (P value0.047) between thethree studied groups.

Conclusion: FKN can play a role in the recruitmentof lymphocytes during the inflammatoryreaction in atopic dermatitis and in psoriasis..
