Abstract
Background:There are contradictory reports about effect of inguinal hernioplasty on testicular perfusion and sexual function.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of mesh repair of inguinal hernia in Egyptian patient on testicular perfusion and sexual function.
Methods: In a prospective study, 40 male patients with inguinal hernia were enrolled to evaluate their testicular volume and perfusion by colour duplex sonography, quality of life by SF-36 questionnaire and sexual function by IIEF-5 questionnaire. These investigations were done preoperatively and after 3, 6 & 12 months of hernioplasty with polypropylene mesh.
Results:Testicular perfusion was normalised postoperatively without changes in testicular volume. All parameters of sexual function showed significant improvement regarding desire, erection, intromission and orgasm. The total score of IIEF-5 was significantly increased postoperatively. Moreover, 20 patients out of 32 patients (62.5%) with preoperative sexual dysfunction recorded postoperative improvement. The improvement of sexual function was associated with better quality of life.
Conclusions:Inguinal hernioplasty has beneficial effects on quality of life, sexual function and testicular perfusion with no deleterious effects on testicular volume
