Prevalence of Dermatologic Foot Diseases in Saudi Arabia

Abstract:
Objective: To provide an insight into the prevalence of dermatological foot diseases in Saudi
Arabia.
Method: This study was conducted in different geographical areas of Saudi Arabia (Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah, Abha, Riyadh, Dammam and Alkhobar). 115 practicing dermatologists in private and governmental dermatologic clinics participated in the study. Patients presenting to the dermatologists during the study period were invited randomly to participate. The feet of participant patients were examined for signs of foot diseases. The investigators recorded relevant details such as the age, sex of patients, and the presence of predisposing factors for foot disease.
Results: A total of 4401 patients were studied. The prevalence of disease was 43%. Prevalence of fungal infection was 19.9% (Tinea pedis 15.52%, onychomycosis 5.56%), and non fungal diseases 23%.
Conclusion: This study suggests that the prevalence of fungal and non-fungal foot diseases is common in Saudi Arabia
