Retrospective Analysis of Prevalence & Increase Incidence of Leprosy in Kalyubia Governorate

Abstract

A retrospective study was carried out throughreviewing the medical records on prevalenceand incidence of leprosy in Kalyubia governorateduring the period fromthe year 2000 tothe end of the year 2006. The aim of the presentwork is to determine the prevalence rate and thenew case detection rate of leprosy, theproportionof MB cases, child proportion, male to femaleratio, mode of detection of new leprosycases, degree of disability, treatment and completionof MDT,number of relapses and monitoringthe attendance for treatment. The prevalencerate of leprosy in Kalyubia governoratevaried from 0.32 to 0.24 per 10000 fromtheyears 2000 to 2006.The number of newly detectedcases varied from 86 to 45 cases from2000 to 2006 and the new case detection ratevaried from 0.24 to0.14 with obvious decreasein 2006 which may be due to an actual decreasein the disease transmission. As regards, grade 2disability was quite stable, relapse hada remarkablylow rate and most of leprosy patientattended the clinic regularly.
