Periorbital Rejuvenation
Abstract
Background: Thefaceand, inparticular, theeyesareoftenusedasan immediategaugeof chronologicage.Consequently, manyrejuvenative treatmentsaredirectedto theimprovement of periorbitalarea.Oneofthe rejuvenating procedures is chemical peeling. Botulinum toxin type A (BTXA)useinthefieldofdermatologybeganintheearly1990s,when improvementoffacialwrinklingwasobserved, ontreatingpatientswith hemifacialspasm withit.BycombiningchemicalpeelingwithBTXA injection, synergisticbeneficialeffectcanbe achieved.
PatientsandMethods:Tenpatientswithfine tomoderate periorbital rhytideswereenrolledinthestudy, inorder tocompare betweencombined BTXAinjection and medium-depth chemical peeling [combined 70% glycolicacidand35%Trichloroaceticacid(TCA)] ontherightsideversus medium-depthchemicalpeeling(70% glycolicacidand35% TCA) onthe left side in periorbitalrejuvenation.
Results:BTXAinjectionresultedinmildtomoderateimprovementoffine tomoderateperiorbitalrhytides. However, improvementofbothwrinkles andskintexturewasmarkedaftercombiningBTXA injectionandthree successivepeelingsessions.Ontheotherhand, moderateimprovementof bothwrinklesandskintexture occurredfollowingchemicalpeelalone. The degree of clinical improvementwas noticed to be increasedwithrepeated sessionsof chemicalpeel.
Conclusion:Each ofmedium-depth chemicalpeelandBTXA injectionis effectiveforperiorbitalrejuvenation, mainly finetomedium-depthwrinkles. However, by combining both procedures together, synergistic effect is achieved. Besides, this combination eliminates the need for higher concentrationsofeachseparateagent, whichmay carry thehazardof complications.
