Abstract

Ferula hermonis has been widely used as a sexualtonic in the Middle East. It is reputed to enhanceerectile function especially in diabeticpatients, although noscientific verification wasfound. This study aimed to investigate the clinicaland biochemical effects of Ferula hermonison diabetic patients with erectile dysfunction.

Materials and Methods: Capsules containingthe dried alcoholic extract of Ferula hermoniswere administered to sixty diabetic patients dividedinto three groups;group one (controlgroup) consisted of twenty patients receivedplacebo capsules, group two consisted of twentypatients received capsules containing 500 mg ofthe dried alcohol extract of Ferula hermonisand group three consisted of twenty patients receivedcapsules containing 1000 mg of thedried alcohol extract of Ferulahermonis. Patientswere examined both before and after eightweeks of dried extract intake for these biochemicaltests; total testosterone, estrogen, totalcholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, HDL-C,blood glucose, body weight, ALT, and AST andfor erectile function tests; international index oferectile function (IIEF-5), Rigiscan, and duplexultrasound.

Results: In comparison to control group, thetreated groups showed a statistically significantincrease in total testosterone (47%, and145.66% increase for grouptwo and groupthree respectively, P<0.05), a statistically significantincrease in estrogen (52.2%, and125.66% increase for group two and groupthree respectively,P<0.05), a statistically significantincrease in IIEF-5 (21.48%, and 48.4%increase for group two and group three respectively,P<0.05), and a statisticallysignificantincrease in Rigiscan parameters (P<0.05).Lipid profile showed a statistically significantdecrease only at high dose (group three) in totalcholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL (23.3%,22.69%, and 26.52% respectively, P<0.05) butno statistically significant difference was foundin HDL (P>0.05). Otherbiochemical parametersand duplex ultrasound showed no statisticallysignificant difference (P>0.05).

Conclusions: Ferula hermonis has shown to beof a beneficial effect on diabetic men with erec tile dysfunction through increasing serum testosterone and through improving lipoproteins abnormalities associated with Diabetes mellitus. The current study concluded the beneficial effects of Ferula hermonis in diabetic patients with erectile dysfunction. Ferula hermonis could be used as a natural alternative remedy. However, further studies of longer duration and larger numbers of patients are required. In addition, active ingredients should be separated and tested for their specific activities and toxicities.
